Relaxation Activities in Care Homes: Improving Resident’s Mental Well-Being

Self-esteem, self-worth and self-acceptance should never be something that is overlooked, so let’s ensure our residents are truly happy within themselves by incorporating relaxation activities. The mental well-being of residents in care homes can often be neglected and overlooked. However, at Athena Healthcare Group, we believe in incorporating activities like pampering will help residents feel beautiful and confident. Therefore, this blog will discuss how pampering can improve the mental well-being of residents in care homes.

Looking after physical and mental well-being

Here at Athena Healthcare Group, we always make sure we incorporate relaxation activities to ensure our resident’s mental well-being is taken care of. These activities can reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and enhance our resident’s moods. It’s our priority to make sure that the mental well-being, as well as the physical well-being of our residents, is cared for.

There are several relaxation activities that can be implemented in care homes to improve residents’ mental well-being. Some examples include gentle exercise, listening to calming music, aromatherapy, massage, and mindfulness meditation.

Relaxing activity ideas

Here are a few relaxing activities we use with our residents to help improve their mental well-being.

  • Massages

Make them feel comfortable, relaxed and at home. Hand and foot massages can improve sleep. In addition, manicures and pedicures can make residents feel pampered and special, which then boosts their confidence.

  • Meditation

Guided meditation has a whole host of benefits to improve well-being such as reducing stress, increasing patience and teaching techniques to manage chronic pain.

Humans can feel emotions through different types of music, such as joy and sorrow. It’s important that our residents still feel emotions through music and can connect with different feelings. Playing calming music can reduce anxiety and stress levels, improve mood, and enhance their overall mental well-being. Additionally, listening to music can provide a sense of comfort and familiarity, particularly for those with dementia. Music therapy can help improve the mental well-being of residents, it’s also a great tool for helping residents to reminisce.

Make them feel at home

When people join our care homes, they join our family, and it’s important to us that everyone’s physical and mental well-being is cared for. It’s a new chapter in their life, an important one, so we want to always ensure they are happy, calm and relaxed. That’s why relaxing activities are always included in our weekly activity plans.
